How To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is a term referring to the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up this profession more as a hobby. They become interested in collecting and evaluating loose diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of these hobbyists start to visit different local areas to look for raw gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If this hobby interest you read along as this article discusses the in and outs of gemstone collecting.

To start off right you need to learn all you can on each of the gemstones out there. This knowledge will help you to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from wasting your money. Get the answer to questions like how, where and what to buy.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones are valued much higher the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They drop in value the more they deviate from the spectral color.

Gemstone cut is very important and factors into appraisal of diamonds but you're gemstones as well. An excellent cut will highlight the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One excellent way to determine the excellence of the cut of the stone is to consider if it is able to reflect light on a consistent level over its entire surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of the light will refract out rather than reflecting inside the stone. Gem color appears washed out.

Next up is the clarity of the gemstone. Clarity refers to the the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of the gemstone under consideration. Any large flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.

Next comes weight and size. Save for pearls and corals, all gemstones are valued by the unit called the carat. One carat is the equivalent of 0.2 grams Be aware however, that weight and size are not always equal and gemstones. Density or specific gravity can very. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a Sapphire or ruby of the same size would weigh 1.20 carats.

Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Take each loose gemstone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the US in Virginia you can find Amethyst, Garnet, Beryl and Moonstone. And if you travel to Canada you will find opal in the Okanagan, British Columbia or pink and dark blueish spinels in Wakefield, Quebec along with zircons in Sebastopol and Brudnell Townships in Renfew County, Ontario. Think of gemstone collecting for the great hobby it is.

So You Want To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well to begin with they are very beautiful items. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many in this hobby love to collect and work with the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. This article will examine the loose gemstones hobby.

The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to understand as much as you possibly can about the subject of gemstones. The more you learn about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You will know exactly what to look for.

One of the first things you look at is the color of the gemstone. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have pure colors there as close as possible in pureness to the spectral colors of violent, blue, green,, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are muted or on the dark side can lower the value.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and is used not only to appraise diamonds but gemstones in general as well. A good cut highlights the pure color of the stone, lessen any inclusions and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One excellent method to determine the precision in the cut of the stone is to consider how well it reflects light on a consistent basis throughout its surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of the light will refract out instead of reflecting internally. The gem appears washed out.

Next to look at is the issue of gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Larger flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.

You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to their size aspect because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but have different carat weights that result in different prices as well. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference regarding specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Look at each loose gemstone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can find your raw materials through field trips In the US in Idaho you'll find Garnet, Opal, Agate, Obsidian and Sapphire. And in Canada you can find rhodonite at various locations in British Columbia or labradorite on Tabor Island, as well as hessonite garnet in Asbestos, Quebec. Take up gemstone collecting and you won't regret it.

By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors Of the assorted number of gemstones found worldwide today. This article will discuss a number of things you need to know in starting in this interesting hobby.

The first step in beginning this hobby the smart way is by acquiring knowledge about them. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can find everything you need to know that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they have even lent their names to specific colors. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones are valued much higher when they equal the colors in the spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They are valued much less the farther they are from the spectral color.

Gemstone cut is very important and is used not only to appraise diamonds along with gemstones. A precision cut gemstone highlights the natural color of the gemstone, diminishes its inclusions, and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way to determine the precision of gemstone cut is to consider how well and consistent it reflects light over its entire surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

A third consideration is the clarity of the gemstone under consideration. This is talking about the purity of the gemstone or the lack of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different pricing structures. This is due to the difference regarding specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

The Mandalay Ruby. This 48.019-carat cushion-shaped ruby was offered for sale by

that it may have been the 47-carat J.N. Forster Ruby, which was found sometime
before 1877, but this is quickly ruled out. Two large Burma rubies brought to
England in 1875, weighing 37 and 47 carats. These were put on the market by the
Burmese royal family and were later recut by Forster to 32 5/16 and 39 9/16 ct (
or 38 9/16 ct); one sold for 10,000, the other for 20,000, respectively.
Sotheby's also implied at the same time that it could be one other famous yet
unnamed ruby weighing 46 carats; oblong in form (probably cut); mounted in a
brooch with four brilliant-cut diamonds and sold (or bought in) at Christie's of
London on May 7th, 1896 for 8000. Many doubt this version of its history as
well.

Authentic emeralds are very expensive, and not available to the casual collector
. However, with today.s technology scientists can make lab-created emeralds that
can be sold at affordable prices on the open market. They are made by exposing
thin slices of natural beryl to a chemical mixture that is akin to an authentic
emerald. The mixture is one of pure filtered water and acids. Then it is put
under intense heat in saline solution. Then the stone slices cool until crystal
forms and it reaches a gem like thickness. When this process is complete it can
be cut and processed like a gem.

Carats are a measure of weight in gemstones. Due to variations in the chemical composition and density of various types of gemstones, a one carat (1.00 ct.) stone will vary in size depending on the type of gemstone.
For instance, the density of a topaz is greater than the density of a peridot; therefore, the same weight of a one carat topaz will physically be a smaller stone than the same weight of a peridot which will be a larger stone

How To Collect Loose Gemstones

Gemology is the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become interested in making a collection of loose diamonds or loose gemstones. You'll even find some that like to visit various local locations to look for rough gemstones. Right at the start you need to read up on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from wasting your money. This will help you make informed decisions.

A perfect gemstone is obviously valued highly. To see flaws beyond with the eye can see requires a 10X gemstone clarity magnifier or gem microscope. Most hobbyists will use a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size aspect because of being more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different in prices as well. So You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up this profession as a hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect loose gemstones or loose diamonds. You'll even find some that like to visit various local locations to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you read along as we discuss the different aspects of this hobby.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to visit the library and get some books. You want to understand everything there is to know about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you understand about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You will know exactly what to look for.

The chief thing you need to take into account is stone color. You'll want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure spectral colors. The spectral colors are violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. The prices of very dark are very pale semiprecious and precious gemstones are less per carat.

The cut of your gemstone is an important factor to consider when buying a gemstone. The cut has to be done in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A poor cut will not reflect the light consistently. Color saturation, hue and tone will always look inconsistent.

Next up is gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone. Any large flaws are visible to the unaided eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.

Next on the agenda is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite gemstone would be about 1.23 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there are so many different types in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Olivine (Peridot), Sapphire or Onyx for instance. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go hunting for raw gemstones. For example in Minnesota you can hunt for Agate and Thomsonite.

Starting To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors Of the assorted number of gemstones found around the world today. Follow along as we discuss a number of things you need to know in starting in this interesting hobby.

To begin with you'll need the knowledge on the various gemstones available. This knowledge will help you to know what you're buying so you buy the right items. This will help you make informed decisions.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even become associated with particular ones. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones become higher in value the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They become less valuable when they are lighter or darker than the pure spectral color.

Gemstone cut is very important and factors into appraisal of diamonds but gemstones as well. A precision cut gemstone highlights the pure color of the stone, diminish any inclusions, and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way to determine the precision of its cut is to check how consistently it reflects the light throughout its surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside the stone. The gem appears washed out.

Next to look at is the aspect of clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of a stone being considered. Normally large flaws are visible to the naked eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

Next up are size and weight. Except for corals and pearls, all gemstones are priced by the carat. One carat is the equivalent of 0.2 grams You should know however that size and weight and gemstones are not the same. The density and specific gravity can differ in stones. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized ruby or sapphire is 1.20 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and also rewarding in the long run. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people loved to spend weekends to go hunting gemstones. For example in Hawaii you can find Peridot and Coral. Or you can take the time to travel and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or hunt the peridot fields in Mortlake in Victoria, Australia.

Emeralds are hard but are sensitive and prey to flaws or inclusions. They
require a lot more care than most other gemstones. The flaws occur through the
trials imposed by nature, and sometimes the engineering process developed by man
. The identification of fissures, however, does serve a useful purpose. The
flaws help to weed out artificial emeralds from the real ones. Inclusions
actually prove an emeralds authenticity. Refraction and density of the stones
vary from the location where they are found. Emeralds are found buried in their
parent rock.
