Collecting Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

For many people collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. They simply love the beauty and the colors Of the assorted number of gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. This article will discuss a number of things you need to know in starting in this interesting hobby.

To begin with you need to read up on the wide variety of stones available. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for so you buy the right items. This will help you make informed decisions.

The chief thing you need to consider should be the color of the gemstone. You'll want the stone to be as close in color as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. The spectral colors are orange, red, violet, green, yellow, and blue. The prices of very dark are very pale precious and semi precious gemstones are less per carat.

The cut of a gemstonestone is the second most important value determination to consider. How precise the cut is is the factor that determines the amount of light the stone will reflect. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

The clarity in a stone is our next factor. Clarity refers to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. A flawless gemstone is definitely worth much more. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye requires a 10X gemstone loupe or gemstone microscope. Most hobbyists will use an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing stamps, coins, beads as well as gems.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size criteria since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different in prices as well. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference of specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is such a variety in gemstones you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Lapis lazuli, Chalcedony (bloodstone) or Turquoise and then try others. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if money is tight you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the US. In New Hampshire you can rock hunt for Beryl, Rock Crystal and Garnet.

The topaz has superb qualities of color, clarity and hardness. Its. hardness
allows it to be easily polished because it contains an innate smoothness. The
smoothness and slipperiness of topaz is one of the ways it is identified along
with the brilliancy of color. It comes in all different shades of yellow, blue,
brown and rose reds. Most deep blue hues are produced artificially by heat and
irridation. Citrine is sometimes mistaken for topaz. The more intense colors of
topaz is what usually sets it apart from the lighter citrine colors. However,
there is a test known as the "methylene iodide test" that can make a final
determination. A stone is place in the solution, and a citrine gem will float
while the topaz will sink to the bottom. While hardness is a definite prime
attribute, topaz has a real disadvantage with its. basal cleavage. This makes
the stone very sensitive to sharp blows so artisans and miners have to handle it
very carefully.

How To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become interested in collecting loose diamonds or loose gemstones. Some people even begin to travel to various locations nearby or even different countries to look for raw gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If this sounds like a hobby you would like to get involved in follow along as we reveal the various factors in gemstone collecting.

At the very beginning you need to learn all you can on the various gemstones available. This knowledge will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from making mistakes. Get the answer to questions like how, where and what to buy.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even become associated with particular ones. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones are valued much higher the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They become less valuable the farther they are from the pure spectral color.

The cut of the gemstone is the second most important factor to consider before buying. How precise the cut is determines the amount of light is reflected by the gemstone. It will fully ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much it will be valued.

A third consideration is the clarity of the gemstone under consideration. This is talking about the gemstones purity or the absence of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal structure. Needless to say, stones with no flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Another consideration is the duo of size and weight. Because gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can be very enjoyable and could be rewarding as well over time. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Maryland you can search for Beryl and Clam Pearl. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or hunt specimens the quartz regions in Wave Hill in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Benitoite is only found in San Benito County, in Southern California. Just a few
hundred carats are found each year. A lot of this, maybe even a majority, is
kept in its natural form. Very little gets cut and offered for sale. Because it
is fairly well known and quite beautiful, the larger pieces demand prices around
$1,000 per carat. This is quite a bit less than a diamond or ruby, but much more
that other rare gems.

The weight of a diamond is measured in carats (ct.). Each carat is divided into
100 points. For example: 1ct.= 100 points, 1/2 ct. = 50 points. Points in a
fraction are measured within acceptable ranges. For example: a 1/2 ct diamond
pendant may have a range of + or - .06 points. In other words, the total diamond
weight may vary from .44 to .56 points and still be considered a 1/2 carat.

The Mandalay Ruby. This 48.019-carat cushion-shaped ruby was offered for sale by
Sothebys New York on October 18th, 1988 but received no bids. Sothebys implied
that it may have been the 47-carat J.N. Forster Ruby, which was found sometime
before 1877, but this is quickly ruled out. Two large Burma rubies brought to
England in 1875, weighing 37 and 47 carats. These were put on the market by the
Burmese royal family and were later recut by Forster to 32 5/16 and 39 9/16 ct (
or 38 9/16 ct); one sold for 10,000, the other for 20,000, respectively.
Sotheby's also implied at the same time that it could be one other famous yet
unnamed ruby weighing 46 carats; oblong in form (probably cut); mounted in a
brooch with four brilliant-cut diamonds and sold (or bought in) at Christie's of
London on May 7th, 1896 for 8000. Many doubt this version of its history as
well.

Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because they are very beautiful items. And just like natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many hobbyists love to collect and show case each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Follow along as we examine the loose gemstones hobby.

The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some reading material. You want to learn everything there is to know about your new hobby. The more you know about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You will know exactly what you are looking at.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. These materials are so related to their color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones are valued much higher when they equal the colors in the spectrum of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They become less valuable the more they deviate from the spectral color.

How the gemstone is cut is the next factor to consider. The precision of the cut is the factor that determines the amount of light the stone will reflect. It will ultimately ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much it will be valued.

A third consideration is the clarity of the stone. This is talking about the purity of the gemstone or the lack of internal inclusions, particles or spots within the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

Next on the agenda is the duo of size and weight. Because gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite would be about 1.23 carats.

Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gems that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Take each loose gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the United States in Idaho you'll find Garnet, Opal, Agate, Obsidian and Sapphire. And if you travel to Canada you will find nephrite jade in Dease Lake, British Columbia or amazonite (microcline) near Eganville, Onttario and even amethyst from Nova Scotia. Think of collecting gemstones as a great hobby and pastime.
